The SIBO test is a breath test to assess the presence of bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine as a cause of digestive symptoms. SIBO or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth occurs when there is an overgrowth of commensal bacteria in the small intestine. These bacterium produce either hydrogen or methane gas in response to certain foods, which is what we assess with this test. The SIBO test includes a substrate (lactulose, glucose or fructose) to be consumed before testing the breath multiple times over a 3 hour period.
