Secrets to Glowing Skin from the Inside - Out

It’s no secret that I am a self-confessed gut health guru due to my own history with gut issues which I now manage through food and holistic lifestyle choices. I often joke about what I once viewed as a seeming curse (Crohn’s disease) is now viewed as a blessing due to improvements my ‘gut-friendly’ diet has made in so many other unexpected areas of life. But I have especially noticed, along with many other people, that by practicing gut-healing principles (almost religiously), my skin health has also benefited greatly. To the point where I receive numerous compliments, often followed by curious questions behind the secret to naturally healthy, glowing skin.

My secret, without getting into too much detail is all about fuelling the body right by maintaining a wholefoods diet, where inflammatory foods such as dairy, gluten and refined sugars are avoided, and foods containing a moderate amount of healthy fats, quality protein (especially from bone broth) and an abundance of micronutrients from vegetables and fruits with an emphasis on including Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Antioxidants which are especially great for healing epithelium of the gut lining and the skin. So essentially, eating to beautify the skin from the inside – out.

But my all-time secret to good skin from the inside – out is consuming my favourite nourishing oils, which do absolute wonders for reducing inflammation in the body, while simultaneously nourishing the skin layers on a deeper more noticeable level.

My favourite plant-based oils for healthy skin and body

These are my 6 favourite plant-based oils I consume daily as a priority in my diet:

Algal Oil:

Algal oil is the oil that is derived directly from algae. This oil contains DHA, which accounts for 97 percent of the omega-3 fats in the brain. Algal oil appears to be bio-equivalent in providing DHA to plasma and red blood cells to that of salmon in a safe and convenient source of non–fish-derived DHA (1).

It is sustainable and serves as a great vegetarian option to provide amazing health benefits including reducing inflammation, reducing blood clot formation, promotes brain development during pregnancy, reduces blood pressure, aids eye health and supports cardiovascular health.

Pomegranate seed oil:

Is shown to help increase the body's resilience after experiencing inflammation, soothe muscle pain, reduce swelling, increase collagen production and reduce its breakdown, thus preventing the signs of aging on skin, rejuvenate and strengthen the hair, leaving it looking lustrous and feeling healthy.

Raspberry seed oil:

Red raspberry seed oil contains a high amount of antioxidantsand essential fatty acids like alpha-linoleic acid, and vitamins A and E.These fight oxidative stress and reduce inflammation which encourages healthy skin cell regeneration and growth, resulting in smoother, tighter skin. It has demonstrated benefits with eczema, psoriasis and dry skin, while providing well-known anti-aging properties for the skin.

Sea Buckthorn oil:

My absolute favourite oil,Sea buckthorn oil, also known as “Botox oil”, contains an incredible 190 nutrients and phytonutrients. In fact, its vitamin C concentrations are 12 times higher than that of an orange! If you aren’t aware, vitamin C is actually referred to as the “beauty vitamin”. Fatty acids are also absolutely fantastic for healthy, clear and glowing skin. Because of its rich lipid profile (Omega 3, 6, the elusive omega 7 and 9), sea buckthorn has traditionally been used to replenish oils in the skin, reduce triglyceride levels and mitigate liver and pulmonary fibrosis, as well as to relieve inflamed epithelial tissues, including dry eyes and vaginal dryness. It is also used to treat symptoms of Sjögren’s Syndrome thanks to its ability to reduce inflammation and boost collagen for plumper, firmer, brighter skin.

Tomato seed oil:

Studies have documented that the seeds of tomatoes contain essential fatty acids (Omega 3-6-9), lysine, zeaxanthin, antioxidants (beta-carotene), vitamins (a significant amount of vitamin E), minerals (rich in copper, iron, manganese and zinc), carotenes including lycopene and phytosterols and other important nutrients that play an important role in the health and radiance of the skin. Lycopene-rich lipids are essential ingredients for the treatment and prevention of cutaneous signs of aging, and for reducing UV damage to the skin as well as maintaining prostate health.

Safflower oil:

A rich source of vitamin E, Oleic and Linoleic fatty acids and antioxidantsis traditionally used to strengthen immunity and to enhance blood flow, which provides relief to those suffering from obstructed menses by regulating the cycle and easing menstrual cramps. Safflower Oil is believed to reduce the levels of inflammation in the body, reduce both harmful cholesterol and blood sugar as well as to promote weight loss by helping facilitate the body’s elimination of excess fat.

And there you have it! My 6 most treasured oils to consume for overall health from the inside – out! All of these oils can conveniently be found in one quality supplement which I make a staple in my day.
