Boosting Testosterone Through Gut Microbiome

As men venture past the age of 30, Testosterone levels can become a focus point of their health. And rightly so, since it is after this age that we see levels of this hormone start to more significantly decline. Lower testosterone levels can cause not just the commonly known muscle deterioration, but gaining of body fat, changes in muscle/fat composition on the body, and many diseases including metabolic syndrome, heart disease, Prostate Cancer and Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) to name just a few.

Apart from Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) there are natural ways men can utilise to help increase their T as they advance in age. More recent studies are showing that the Gut Microbiome can play an integral part on T levels and its metabolites in the gut.

A study conducted on elderly males in Japan this year showed that men with high amounts of Firmacutes bacteria in their gut had higher amounts of serum T compared to men with lower amounts of this bacteria in their gut (1).

The study also proved that probiotic strains Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus paracasei could also play an influential role in increasing T in men.

Interestingly, inflammation driven by intestinal bacteria-derived endotoxins has been reported to suppress testosterone production in males. Another reason to work towards reducing intestinal inflammation and hyper-permeability (Leaky gut).

This research uncovers yet another interesting area of health that needs further exploration to demonstrate yet again, how gut microbiome is such an influential pillar for health.
